I am here to help you. With over 16 years of experience, I have the knowledge and experience to support you through the issues that are causing you distress. Together, we can find solutions that work for you.

A Little More About Me I was born and raised in Edmonton and Edmonton will always be home to me.

When I am not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, baking delicious treats, practicing my photography skills, and travelling to new destinations near and far from home.

I have always been inspired by Diane Ladd’s phrase, “if I can help one person in this world, then it’s enough, and I’ve done my job.”

I am always intrigued by how the personal story, experiences, and perspectives of each client are as unique as their fingerprints: everybody has them, but no two people’s prints are exactly alike.

I have always enjoyed helping people, so it was only right that I work in a profession where I can assist my clients accomplish their goals of learning effective problem solving strategies, learning how to successfully implement these techniques and enjoying a better quality of life

NIHB Approved Provider

I am an NIHB-approved mental health provider and offer counselling services for Indigenous clients eligible for the Non-Insured Health Benefits program. My approach is culturally respectful, trauma-informed, and grounded in safety and empowerment.

Areas of Focus

Trauma Counselling & PTSD Therapy

I help adults heal from single-incident trauma, chronic trauma, and developmental trauma. My approach to trauma therapy integrates Somatic Experiencing, Prolonged Exposure, and Emotion-Focused Therapy, aiming to reduce symptoms such as hypervigilance, emotional overwhelm, and dissociation while restoring a sense of internal safety and stability.

Anxiety Counselling & Stress Management

Support for generalized anxiety, panic attacks, chronic worry, perfectionism, and stress-related symptoms. Therapy focuses on identifying and understanding anxiety patterns, regulating the nervous system, and developing long-term coping strategies. Clients learn to respond rather than react, build emotional resilience, and create a greater sense of calm and balance in their lives.

Burnout Therapy & Compassion Fatigue Support

Therapy for adults experiencing workplace burnout, emotional exhaustion, or compassion fatigue, especially those in healthcare, education, social services, and caregiving roles. Sessions focus on strengthening boundaries, restoring energy, and rebuilding emotional resilience.

Grief Counselling & Life Transitions

Compassionate support for adults navigating grief, loss, identity changes, and major life transitions. I help clients process complex emotions, adapt to change, restore inner stability, and discover renewed purpose and direction.

Emotional Regulation & High Stress Support

Therapy for overwhelm, shutdown, chronic tension, and feeling “on edge.” Using polyvagal-informed and somatic approaches, sessions focus on grounding, boundaries, and building a more regulated, resilient nervous system.

Romantic & Family Relationship Support

Therapy for individuals navigating challenges in romantic partnerships or family relationships, including communication difficulties, conflict patterns, emotional disconnection, and boundary issues. Sessions focus on understanding relational dynamics, improving communication, managing emotional triggers, and strengthening connection and trust. Using trauma-informed, somatic, and polyvagal-informed approaches, therapy supports healthier, more secure, and resilient relationships.

Women’s Sexual Wellness & Intimacy Support

A supportive, trauma-informed space for women navigating challenges with desire and intimacy. My approach combines somatic and psychological strategies to enhance emotional safety and connection in intimate relationships.

Therapeutic Approaches

Somatic Experiencing (SE) and Mindfulness-Based Therapy

A gentle, body-based trauma therapy approach that supports release of stored stress and unresolved survival responses. Somatic Experiencing helps clients understand patterns of fight, flight, freeze, and shutdown while building greater capacity, resilience, and emotional safety. Practical grounding, awareness, and present-moment techniques that reduce reactivity and increase emotional regulation. Mindfulness-based strategies support resilience, clarity, and a calmer internal experience.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

A research-based approach that helps clients identify, express, and transform emotional patterns contributing to anxiety, trauma symptoms, relationship difficulties, or self-criticism. EFT supports deeper emotional clarity and more adaptive responses to stress.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)

A structured, evidence-based treatment for PTSD and trauma-related avoidance. PE gradually reduces fear responses, helps reclaim a sense of safety, and decreases the emotional intensity of trauma memories in a paced and supportive manner.

Clinical Hypnosis

A focused therapeutic process using guided awareness, imagery, and relaxation to address a variety of symptoms and enhance internal resources.

Attachment-Informed & Compassion-Focused Therapy

Approaches designed to strengthen self-understanding, improve relational patterns, and cultivate greater self-compassion. These frameworks are especially helpful for adults healing from relational trauma, chronic self-criticism, or insecure attachment patterns.

Dennis Barrie

Dennis Barrie has been a Registered Psychologist since 2015. In that time he has focused his practice on supporting individuals, couples, and families impacted by addictions.

Dennis works with clients of all ages except for young pre elementary children. The foundation of Dennis’s work is based on his patience, experience, understanding, compassion, and curiosity.

While respecting the 12 step approach to treatment, Dennis primarily utilizes Motivational Interviewing to provide addiction support. Clients are initially giving an informal assessment where treatment options are explored, including referrals to residential programs.

Evidence based psychoeducation can be provided to individuals or loved ones impacted by the addiction. Family therapy can be utilized to support families even if specific individuals do not wish to attend.

The family therapy provided utilizes Emotionally Focused Family Therapy as well as specific experiential activities designed to shift the family to a more balanced state. Emotionally Focused Therapy is also utilized in couples counselling.

While Dennis has a focus on addictions, he is able to support individuals with comorbid issues while doing addiction support. Some of these issues include communication skills, problem solving skills, depression, anxiety, family of origin issues, grief, and trauma.

Dennis’s fundamental belief is that addiction is a coping strategy that was once beneficial but no longer benefits the client. Helping a client develop new coping skills requires the client to move from isolation to connection.

Feel free to call for a consult. If you come to the office parking is validated.
